The name "Bridge of the Gods" comes from a native American legend about the Great Spirit building a great stone bridge across the river at this location. Geological surveys reveal a massive landslide occurred 500 years ago blocking the gorge and forming a natural dam.
Cantilever bridges of this type are an amazing balancing act. All of the massive steelwork of this bridge is essentially resting on four pin connections, two on each pier.
