David Plowden cites the Grand Mère as the first North American suspension bridge to use prestressed twisted wire rope-strand cables. Built by Robinson and Steinman, the Grand Mère does not resemble their other nearby, contemporary suspension bridges (Deer Isle, Waldo-Hancock, Thousand Islands). The St. Maurice is dammed a few hundred yards downstream. This probably accounts for the low clearance as the river is not navigable except by pleasure craft. The low clearance eliminated the need for side spans.
